Rural Social Scheme

The Rural Social Scheme on the islands is administered by Comhar na nOileán Teoranta in cooperation with island Development Companies and Co-operatives.

The scheme aims to provide income support to farmers and fishermen who are in receipt of Social Welfare benefits and to provide benefits to rural communities.

Work undertaken on the scheme includes environmental maintenance and enhancement, waste management schemes, certain services to the elderly and other community projects.

Participants work 19.5 hours per week and they can work hours that are suitable to their farming/fishing schedule.

Anyone interested in participating should contact their local island organisation or staff in Comhar na nOileán Teoranta to ensure that they are eligible.
